Casa Vinicolă Luca is a family business with a history that fades into the mists of the past. The modern era has ruthlessly impacted this family, whose original possessions were taken away by the Soviet regime. A large part of the family was deported to the harsh labor life in Siberia, a fate that befell them. Only great-grandfather Petru managed to escape deportation because he happened to be working in the vineyard during that dreadful night and remained there for several days until the work was completed. The vineyard became his refuge. Upon his return, he discovered his home occupied by Soviet officers. With determination, he fought to bring his family back home and largely succeeded in convincing the regime that they were neither "kulaks" nor "traitors to the motherland." When they returned, they were assigned the barn, where their tools for working the land and vineyard had previously been stored. There, they continued their lives. Grandfather Grigore carried on the tradition and produced wine throughout his life, albeit under domestic conditions, as private property was not recognized and entrepreneurship was not allowed. During perestroika, father Ion found himself in one of the largest wine cellars in the country, Cricova, where he and his son Vasile were involved in the production of some of Moldova’s most esteemed wines—the pride of the Cricova cellar.
