Casreli Saperavi 2019
Casreli Saperavi Casreli Saperavi is a remarkable natural wine from Georgia, made from the iconic Saperavi grape. This wine offers a unique experience, combining Georgia’s rich history and traditions with the careful craftsmanship of Casreli Wines. It originates from the Kakheti region, an area renowned for its ancient winemaking heritage and ideal climate for cultivating the Saperavi grape. Saperavi is one of Georgia’s most prized grape varieties, known for its deep, robust color—an exceptional trait since both the skin and flesh of the grape are red, a rarity among grape varieties. The wine is fermented in traditional Georgian qvevri, large clay vessels that have been used for winemaking for thousands of years. After fermentation, it matures in stainless steel tanks, preserving its fresh, vibrant acidity and ensuring a well-balanced flavor. This aging process makes Casreli Saperavi approachable and easy to drink, despite the intensity of the grape. With an alcohol content of 14%, it boasts a full, rounded taste that never feels too heavy or overly alcoholic. Discover the unique flavors of Georgia in your glass with Casreli Saperavi today!
The Casreli Saperavi has a deep, dark red color that immediately reflects the wine's power and intensity. Upon tasting, the fresh, vibrant acidity stands out, giving the wine an elegant freshness. The flavor is full and fruity, with ripe notes of blackcurrants and dark red cherries, accompanied by spicy hints of leather and bay leaf. Despite its full-bodied character, the wine remains well-balanced and does not feel too heavy, making it an excellent choice as a food wine. This wine pairs well with a variety of dishes. Its robust flavors and fresh acidity make Casreli Saperavi a perfect match for grilled meats such as lamb or steak. It also complements hearty stews and grilled vegetables exceptionally well. Additionally, the wine pairs beautifully with spiced dishes, particularly from Georgian or Middle Eastern cuisine, where its intense flavors enhance the spices in the food, while the acidity provides a pleasant balance. To fully appreciate the complex flavors of Casreli Saperavi, it is recommended to serve the wine at a temperature of 18°C. This highlights its fresh acidity and complexity without allowing the alcohol to dominate. This wine is not only delightful to enjoy on its own but also serves as an outstanding companion to a meal.
Casreli is a small-scale winery from Kakheti, located in eastern Georgia. The story behind Casreli is remarkable: the project was founded by five friends, all doctors who met while studying medicine in Tbilisi. In 2014, they decided to take the leap into winemaking, a tradition practiced by thousands of people in Kakheti. However, the men of Casreli had bigger ambitions. They wanted to take it seriously, so they invested in their own vineyard. Just a year later, they planted their first vines, and not long after, they began reaping their first successes. At the International Qvevri Wine Competition in 2016, they won both gold and silver medals for their wines, highlighting their growing reputation.
