Casa Vinicola Luca is a deeply rooted family business with a rich history that, however, was not without challenges. The recent history of this family faced a particular trial. The Soviet regime took all their possessions and forced much of the family into hard labor in Siberia. Only great-grandfather Petru escaped this deportation because he happened to be in the vineyard on that fateful night and had to stay there for a few days to finish his work due to the lack of a car at the time. The vineyard was his salvation. Upon his return, he discovered that his house had been taken over by Soviet officers instead of his loved ones. He fought to bring his family back home and largely succeeded in convincing the regime that they were not "class enemies" or "traitors to the homeland." Upon their return, they were assigned a barn where they had previously stored their farming tools and vineyard supplies. There, they continued their lives. Grandfather Grigore kept the tradition alive and produced wine throughout his life, albeit under restrictive conditions, as private ownership was not allowed at the time and entrepreneurship was prohibited. During the Perestroika period, father Ion worked at one of the largest wine cellars in the country, Cricova. There, he collaborated with his son Vasile and created some of the most praised wines in Moldova. Son Ion continued the family tradition and, after numerous international trips, decided to give back what had once been taken from them by the Soviet regime: the opportunity to produce wine under their own name – Casa Vinicola Luca. In 2014, they launched the CARPE DIEM wine series, which mainly consists of indigenous grape varieties but also includes some international varieties. Success quickly followed. Each year, the Carpe Diem wines are praised at numerous national and international competitions, and they have held the status of the most awarded small wine producer in Moldova for many years.
