Casa Vinicolă Luca is an ancient family business deeply rooted in the annals of history. However, modern times have taken their toll on the generations within this family. The Soviet regime confiscated all their property and deported much of the family to brutal labor camps in Siberia. Only great-grandfather Petru escaped deportation, as he happened to be working in the vineyard that fateful night. At that time, cars were not common, so one would spend several days in the vineyard until the work was done. This fact saved his life. Grandfather Grigore continued the tradition and spent his entire life producing wine, albeit under domestic conditions, as private property was prohibited, and entrepreneurship was not allowed during that time. Father Ion lived through the Perestroika period and found work in one of the largest wineries in the country, Cricova, where he worked alongside his son Vasile and created some of the most respected wines in Moldova – Cricova wines. Ion continued the family tradition, and after extensive travels around the world, he decided to bring back to the family what had been taken from them by the Soviet regime: the right to produce wine under their own name – Casa Vinicolă Luca. In 2014, they introduced the CARPE DIEM wine series, mainly made from native grape varieties, but also including some international varieties. Their efforts were quickly rewarded, as the Carpe Diem wines received recognition year after year at numerous national and international competitions. For several consecutive years, they have now been the most awarded small wine producer in Moldova.
